Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is one of India’s most vibrant and joyous celebrations. It marks the arrival of spring and symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Apart from playing with colors, dancing, and celebrating with loved ones, food plays a huge role in Holi festivities. Traditional sweets and drinks are prepared across households to add flavor and happiness to the festival.
Here are four authentic and delicious recipes to make your Holi 2025 even more special!
1. Gujiya – The Classic Holi Sweet
Ingredients:
- 2 cups maida (all-purpose flour)
- 4 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/2 cup khoya (reduced milk solids)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)
- 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
- 1 tbsp raisins
- Oil for deep frying
Method:
- Mix flour and ghee to form a crumbly texture. Add water gradually to make a firm dough. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a pan, roast khoya until it turns golden brown. Let it cool.
- Add powdered sugar, chopped nuts, raisins, and cardamom powder to the khoya.
- Roll small portions of the dough into circles, fill them with the mixture, and seal the edges.
- Deep fry on low-medium heat until golden brown. Drain excess oil and let them cool before serving.
Tip: Store gujiya in an airtight container for up to a week.
2. Thandai – A Refreshing Holi Drink
Ingredients:
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 10 almonds (soaked and peeled)
- 5 cashews
- 2 tbsp fennel seeds
- 1 tbsp poppy seeds
- 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
- A pinch of saffron strands
- 1 tbsp rose water
Method:
- Soak fennel seeds, poppy seeds, almonds, and cashews in warm water for 1 hour.
- Blend them into a smooth paste with a little milk.
- Boil milk, add sugar, saffron, and the blended paste.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes, then let it cool.
- Add rose water and refrigerate for 2-3 hours before serving chilled.
Tip: Garnish with rose petals and chopped nuts for extra flavor.
3. Dahi Vada – A Flavorful Savory Delight
Ingredients:
- 1 cup urad dal (split black gram)
- 2 cups yogurt
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cumin powder

- 1 tbsp tamarind chutney
- Oil for frying
Method:
- Soak urad dal overnight and grind into a thick batter.

- Whisk yogurt with salt and cumin powder. Place vadas in the yogurt.

Method:
