Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a 1987 batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term, starting March 1, 2025. He succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, the first woman SEBI chief.
Tuhin Kanta Pandey is a veteran bureaucrat with decades of experience in finance, investment, and public asset management. Before his appointment as SEBI chairman, he served as the Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), where he played a crucial role in India's major disinvestment initiatives, including the privatization of Air India.
As DIPAM Secretary, Pandey led the historic privatization of Air India, successfully transferring the airline back to the Tata Group.
2. Role in Union Budget 2025-26He was instrumental in shaping the Union Budget, which introduced ₹1 lakh crore in tax relief for the middle class.
3. New Income Tax BillPandey played a key role in drafting the new Income Tax Bill, aimed at replacing the outdated 1961 Income Tax Act.
With his vast experience in financial governance, Pandey is expected to bring major reforms in India's securities market. His expertise in investment policy, taxation, and asset management positions him as a strong leader to drive SEBI’s regulatory and developmental objectives.
